In 1980 Rabbi Tolwin and his family moved to Detroit to teach in Beth Jacob. His passion for Jewish education was ignited eight years earlier when he met Rabbi Noah Weinberg in Israel and began teaching in a new Yeshiva called Aish HaTorah. In 1984 the Detroit branch of Aish HaTorah was founded. As Aish grew, innovative programs were launched. SpeedDating, The Crash course in Hebrew Reading, Discovery Seminars, Home Groups, Lunch and Learns, Fax of Life weekly newsletter by fax, and hundreds of other educational programs. What stood Rabbi Tolwin apart was the non-judgemental personal relationship that he created with everyone he met. When you look around our community, you will find many organizations and hundreds of families that trace their start to Rabbi Tolwin’s commitment to the Jewish People and his mission to share the beauty of Judasim with the Detroit Jewish community.
